A true southern tradition and favorite of the Kentucky Derby, a Mint Julep has to be prepared properly to truely to enjoy this legendary beverage. The Mint Julep was best described by John Davis as “a dram of spirituous liquor that has mint steeped in it, taken by Virginians of a morning.”

How To Make a Mint Julep

  1. Put three spearmint leaves in the bottom of a mixing glass.  
  2. Make julep syrup by dissolving 2 parts sugar in 1 part boiling water.
  3. Pour in 1oz. julep syrup and 1 oz. bourbon.
  4. Muddle to crush the mint leaves and mix the bourbon and syrup.
  5. Add an additional 3oz. the bourbon.
  6. Let the mixture stand for at least 3 minutes. 
  7. Strain into a silver or pewter cup filled with shaved ice.
  8. Garnish with a spearmint sprig.
  9. Serve with a short straw.
A traditional mint julep is always served in a silver or pewter cup. The drink is held only by the bottom and top edges of the cup to allow frost to form on the outside of the cup. 
Mix things up a bit and try brandy, rum, rye or gin for bourbon.

  1. Using a pewter cup makes the mint julep taste amazing. Do yourself a favor and do not use a glass. I also like just a little bit more mint than most to give it an extra refreshing aroma.
